3D-ICONS is a pilot project funded under the European Commission’s ICT Policy Support Programme which builds on the results of CARARE and 3D-COFORM.

3D-ICONS brings together partners from across Europe with the relevant expertise to digitise in 3D architectural and archaeological monuments and buildings identified by UNESCO as being of outstanding cultural importance. The project will contribute content to Europeana aiming to increase the critical mass of engaging 3D content available to Europeana’s users.

"WelCOM project" for Engineering Asset Life Cycle Optimal Management.

The WelCOM project aims to bring in new methods, tools and services to facilitate the implementation of a Condition – Based Maintenance Strategy (CBM), employing a flexible toolset of solutions based on Wireless Sensor Networks and Mobile Devices. Thus, maintenance – related data and services become ubiquitously and transparently available anytime, anywhere and to anyone with authorised access. This constitutes the key concept of e-Maintenance. The WelCOM platform will be flexible and customizable in order to adapt and operate on top of diverse plant installations and equipment profiles.

"CARARE", Connecting ARchaeology and ARchitecture in European
Call: FP7, ICT PSP 2009 Funding: European Commission

CARARE project aims to directly support the chief objectives of Best Practice Networks for digital libraries under the ICT PSP 2009 work programme, by increasing the quantity and quality of digital content available from the archaeology and architectural heritage domain to users of Europeana. CARARE’s main objective is to establish an aggregation service for the domain and create the best conditions for Europe’s network of heritage agencies, non-governmental heritage bodies, archaeological museums, research institutions and specialist digital archives to contribute to the achievement of Europeana’s i2010 content targets. It will develop services to improve interoperability with Europeana of existing digital content for heritage sites and related objects, including unique archaeological monuments, architecturally important buildings, historic town centres and industrial monuments, many of which are recognised as being of World heritage, European heritage and National heritage importance. A further objective of the CARARE network is to make a positive contribution to the development of Europeana through involvement in the Europeana Project Group, and by addressing practical issues relating to the harvesting of 3D/VR formats, content relating to the archaeology/architecture domain and the handling of geographic information. CARARE aims to enable 2D and 3D content for heritage places to be brought together and linked up in Europeana. The objective is to establish a critical mass of highly interesting content about heritage places and create the potential for new commercial and public services for tourism, education and research to be set up in future.

Hellas HPC National Network of Excellence in High-Performance Computing
European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures, by ESFRI-European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (e-infrastructures)

The project is aiming at creating a National network of excellence in High-Performance infrastructure and computing in general. The network will bridge research groups, researchers and High performance computing users from research and academic institutions coming from the Hellenic region. The main Network activity is the feasibility study which will record the present case and needs concerning High performance computing of the Hellenic research community. The study will also include a review of the present knowhow in the area of High performance computing along with an estimation of cost for possible purchase, installation and administration of such a system.

Creating interactive multimedia tools for the Archeological museum of Arta and infokiosks installation

The project involves the implementation and installation of (2) two infokiosks in the regions of interest and selected prominent points for the visitor. It is an easy to use e-guide of the region, combining image sound and text, which will allow the user to access data by using a simple touch screen. By allowing the user to choose the language, (Greek, Italian or English), the user can retrieve any information, having the ability to listen, read or/ and watch (having a visual the sites and a map).

iLearn2Main: Industrial Training System for the Modern Enterprise Maintenance
Funding: Education & Training Directorate, European Commission, through the UK National Authority of the Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong Learning Programme.

Modern enterprises cannot afford to under-utilise internal resources, being material or human. Performance and quality maximisation is sought, among other, through asset (equipment) and human resources (training) management. Assets and equipment should be in the best operating state from a cost efficiency point of view. Industrial personnel at the shop floor should be adequately trained to proactively support such operation. Quality, safety and performance criteria should be continuously met. Assets life cycle costs should be kept down, while securing proper operations and smooth internal logistics. The iLearn2Main project aims to bring the right innovative training and training tools to the right people, in order to improve Maintenance Management practice and therefore the efficiency, quality and safety of operating modern industrial production units. The project is co-ordinated by the Computational Systems and Applications Unit of CETI/R.C. Athena and the Consortium includes the University of Portsmouth (Applicant Organisation), the Swedish Maintenance Society UTEK, Atlantis Engineering in Greece, The Latvia Technology Park in Latvia and The National Council of Small and Medium Sized Private Enterprises in Romania (CNIPMMR)

Training of Local Government Personnel in the Modern Information and Communication Technologies.

The Computational Systems and Applications Unit participates in the Contractor’s Consortium, which, following an open tender procedure, was awarded the contract to implement this project, as subcontractor of Euroconsultants SA. The project is part of the Information Society Programme of Greece. The key project objectives are:
- Facilitate the formation of an "e-culture" among local government personnel.
- Promote e-Government technologies in Local Government.
- Prospective take up measures for the exploitation of Information Society Actions and Projects.
- Familirisation of Local Government Personnel with the Usage of Innovative ICT.
- Act as a facilitator for mediating information and data between Local and Central Government.

“Virtual Guide: Intelligent Multimedia Museum Navigation with Wireless Technology”

The “Virtual Guide” project is developing an advanced museum navigation system based on wireless technology. The system will offer contextualised content delivery, based on user profile and localization. “Virtual Guide” will offer a rich and rewarding experience, stimulating the user interest and maximizing the cultural and educational benefit coming out the museum visit. The offered services will enhance the cultural impact of the museum, making it more accessible and attractive to a greater number of visitors. “Virtual Guide” will be demonstrated on the ecclesiastical museum of Alexandroupolis, Greece, whose exhibition structure and displays follow modern concepts of museology.

Byzantine Mani: Digitization of Church Monuments in the region of Mani, Peloponnese
Funded by the Ministry of Culture

The project regards the digitization and 3D reconstruction of the Byzantine church in the area of Stavri in Mani and the Post-Byzantine church of Aghios Vasileios in the Kelefa settlement. Goal of the project is the dissemination of the monuments and an international accessibility to them. The digitization regards the exterior as well as the interior of the churches. The deliverable will be a 3D digital model of the two churches that will enable the visitor to a virtual visit and wandering in each of them.

The proposed project aims at the creation of a Collaboration and Learning Network regarding the study of 3D Digitisation of objects and spaces and its application in various sectors. The fundamental objective of the Network is the diffusion of the produced information and know-how via workshops and training in specialised laboratories of 3D digitisation, as well as via a web-site of specialised content.

Completion, Extension and Modernization of the Infranstructure of CETI/IRIS for the Documentation, Promotion and Dissemination of the Cultural Heritage in the 21st Century
Funded by the 3rd Support Framework, Operational Program "Competitiveness", Axe "Technological Innovation and Research", Measure "Joint ventures of research and technological development in areas of national priority"

The project concerns the completion, upgrade, modernisation and extension of CETI's infrastructure for the study, documentation, presentation and distribution of cultural heritage. CETI's main objective is to develop the essential infrastructure including advanced equipment, know-how and specialised personnel for the study, investigation, documentation, classification, storage and retrieval of a cultural object preferably via internet. The recording of objects will be enabled from the point of excavation until the point of their final storage or exhibition (museum, collection). The produced digital material would be either for archival purposes (high precision of digitisation, archaeometrical measurements, certified authenticity, controlled access etc) or for presentation and promotional purposes (lower accuracy of digitisation, excellent aesthetic result, suitability for presentation via the internet, easy access to the wider public etc). The infrastructure will be in the disposal of all interested bodies (private and public) in need of analysis, digitisation and presentation of cultural material It will be also available for research purposes in the field of archaeometry, digitisation and new technologies applications in culture.

Design and Construction of New Building for the Cultural and Educational Technology Institute
Funded by the Regional Operational Program of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Prefecture 2000-2006, Axe "Innovation - Competitiveness", Measure "Research - Innovation"

Regards the study and construction of a new building for the accommodation of the Cultural and Educational Technology Institute of the Centre of Integrated Research for the Information Society (CETI/IRIS). The building with a total area of 1.800 sq.m., will be located in a 50.000 sq.m. area and will include a basement and two floors. CETI/IRIS is the only research institute, under the auspices of the Ministry of Development, in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and aims to become the core for the diffusion of new knowledge and know-how in the region. The main part (2 floors) will provide special areas for laboratories, a computing centre, personnel and administration offices, conference & meeting rooms, library, an amphitheatre, as well as auxiliary and communal spaces. The basement will include the essential electronic-mechanical installations, storage areas, and special areas for laboratories with heavy instruments. The architectural design of the surrounding environment includes parking space and green areas, and predicts areas for the future expansion of the Institute and its transformation to a Research Centre. At the same time, the equipment of the Institute will be supplemented with an "environmental" electronic scanner microscope so as to enhance the research possibilities of the Institute, as well as its capabilities to provide services to the productive sector.

NAUTILUS
Funded by the Programme "Thrace-Aegean-Cyprus 2004-2005"

The project "Nautilus" is a proposal for (1) the production of an educational interactive CD-ROM regarding history, archaeology, culture, economy and foreign affairs in Thrace, The Aegean Islands and Cyprus during the Bronze Age and (2) the creation of a website that will promote the material of the project. It is an educational program, and specifically a mystery game, which is directed to High School children. Its subject is the trip of a five-member crew in the prehistoric period that begins from Thrace and arrives at its final destination, Cyprus, sailing through the Aegean. The scope is to enable pupils to combine information gained from different knowledge fields, while at the same time they learn about the ancient civilizations of the three areas. The endmost aim of the project is the usage of the final product in Secondary Education as an educational tool.

Creation of a Prototype of Museum-Toolkits
Funded by the Programme “Thrace-Aegean-Cyprus 2004-2005”

The first aim of the project is to bring the young generation, and especially children, closer to the cultural content of Thrace, The Aegean Islands and Cyprus. The second aim is to amplify the meaning of “culture” as much as to cover the fields of archaeology, ethnography and modern art in all three geographical areas of interest. The third aim is to develop a prototype of museum-toolkits (e.g. constructions, games, stories, fairy-tales and myths, CDs with the use of multimedia and creative challenges) that will enable schools and/ or families to get acquainted with the three geographical areas through a variety of subjects and to compare this information with relative information from their areas, thus gaining a discerning view of subjects rather than simple, dry Knowledge. The child playing will gain experiences on the subjects, thus gaining knowledge through a different educational process, the one of game and creation.

DIGITECH-IÉI: Three-Dimensional Digitization Technologies Technical Report

The proposed study aims at the descriptive presentation of technologies for three-dimensional recording of objects and spaces, as well as of technologies for the digital reconstruction of monuments and three-dimensional objects and spaces in non-existent, past, non-preserved forms. The end product of the project will be a detailed study for the standardization of digitization, storage and management processes that can be immediately applied not only to projects that regard the implementation of digitization centers, but also to the scopes of collectors of cultural material who desire the digital storage of their collections.

KLEPSIDRA – Cultural Heritage Digitization Center

The Cultural and Educational Technology Institute is one of the pioneering institutes in Greece in the field of three-dimensional recording of cultural objects, with significant works on the recording and promotion of the Cultural Heritage using new technologies. In the framework of these interests, the current project aims to the establishment of a new Center for the Digitization of the Cultural Heritage in the area of Thrace. The Center will offer the necessary infrastructure, advanced instrumentation, know-how and specialized personnel for the digitization of ancient, historic and modern age cultural objects using the established best practices and national and worldwide accepted standards. The produced digital content will be either archiving-grade material or material suitable for the promotion and dissemination. The Center will be available to all interested parties (cultural and productive) with digitization needs, as well as for research purposes in the field of digitization.

EASTÅRN MACEDONIAN AND THRACIAN ELECTRONIC THESAURUS: CULTURE, ENVIRONMENT, TOURISM.

The target of this project is the recording, digitization and documentation of material concerning the culture, environment and tourism of the geographical area of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The trilogy History and Culture – Environment – Tourism comprises a collective promotion vehicle for the Greek cultural presence in the area through the ages, its ecosystems and the tourism opportunities offered by the integrated geopolitical and economic segments of the prefecture of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The project aims at the cultural and touristic promotion, exploitation and development of the prefecture and the best possible information of the public regarding the above areas of interest.

FARMBROKER: Integrating e-brokerage process system support activities in farming.

The present proposal aims in the designing, growth and evaluation of a completed enterprise informative system for the support of processes of brokerage and electronic trade of lactation ally animals between DELTA collaborated lactation ally units, with the contribution and support of DELTA Milk Industry. It concerns the concretization and evaluation of functionalism of a multienterprise model for electronic trade (B2B e-commerce). The FARMBROKER constitutes a pioneering attempt of methods and tools growth for the single management of data’s emanating from the distributed network of raw material (milk) production with multiple Stations of Concentration and Factory or Factories of milk treatment. Objective of system is not only the improvement of the raw material that it is provided in the industry, but also the improvement of the animal characteristics aiming at animal’s best possible sale inside and outside of the lactation ally network of units that collaborates with DELTA Milk Treatment Industry.

ECH:TOPICC - Endangered Cultural Heritage: Tools for Preservation, Investigation and Copyright Clearance.

In our rapidly developing technological environment, people are coming to rely more and more on databases and networks to access information. To meet this demand, cultural heritage institutions have to think about the sustainability of their collections. Digital technologies have added new means to the preservation of cultural heritage. Particularly, this project aims at: (i) developing new generation of tools - software for filling and searching Internet-integrated multimedia data base (MDB) and copyrights trading environment in one-step marketing and management of multimedia products and rights capable of operating on European basis; (ii) creating an MMRC value chain that links object creation, marketing, customer and access management, distribution and use; (iii) creating an MDB prototype using as entries multimedia musical heritage items (MMHI), based on early European musical heritage data (the images of musical manuscripts, audio-video music records, related pictures, texts).

E-LEARNING LAND – An Integrated Virtual Environment for Supporting On-Line Learning Communitites (exploiting interoperable repositories of educational resources).

The scope of the project is addressing the needs of school teachers of two representative educational institutions in a manner that will facilitate the formulation of teachers’ online communities of practice (evolving from initial online communities of learning). This will be achieved by studying how a set of different vendors’ software tools are used in the day-to-day teaching activities, and how these activities can be enriched and furthermore supported if the teachers participate in communities of practice and are furthermore supported by repositories of reusable learning resources. The objectives of the proposed project are the following: a) The design and development of interoperable learning resources repositories that will support indexing and storing of learning objects. b) The design and development of the web-based environment that will support the formulation of online communities of learning. c) The design and development of the methodological framework that will support the formulation of online communities of learning, and their innovative integration in different school environments, d) The design and execution of innovative experiments in real school environments.

POLYMNIA – Integrated System of Music Tools and Music Portal.

The project aims at developing a set of innovative tools, which will facilitate many aspects of music research and daily practice, such as musicological research, music creation, music performance, education, general information and recreation. The proposed tools (these are Optical Recognition of Byzantine Music, Content-based Music Retrieval, Toolkit to assist music creation and performance, Virtual Musical Instruments and Multimedia Thesaurus of Greek Music) will work either in a stand-alone mode or in cooperation with a special-purpose Internet portal. Thus, expert users will get to use an integrated music system while the general public will access useful information and content related to music.

MULTI – MINE: Human Network for Research and Technology Training on MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGIES FOR KNOWLEDGE EXTRACTION AND MANAGEMENT.

The proposed project aims at developing a network of scientific and technological training, which shall focus on the extraction and management of knowledge based on the use of multimedia. Due to a tremendous increase in the available digital material on the Web, business sites and various organizations (such as museums, educational and health organizations, etc.), a number of problems have risen regarding accessibility, the management, and beneficial use of this material for business, as well as other, purposes. This is in fact the central issue and focus of the MULTI-MINE network of research, co-operation and exchange of information.

Cultural and Educational Technology Institute (CETI) participates as an official Certified Training Support Center in the programme "Teacher Training in the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education" (Measure 1.2 – Axis “Education and Culture” of the Operational Programme “Information Society”) that is co-funded by the European Union (75% from the European Society Fund) and by National Funds that are managed by the Ministry of Education. The aim of the project is to train educators from the Greek schools in obtaining basic vocations regarding Information Society and Communication, which they will be able to implement afterwards in the educational process.

"Ancient Pottery Technology – Routes of Pottery: System development for an on-going examination of ancient pottery, application on the pottery of ancient Abdera" (PENED 2001).

The programme is incorporated into the operational programme "Competitiveness" 2000-2006 of the 3rd Community support programmes and in the field of Cultural Technologies. The scientific objective of the programme is to develop an integrated system for the examination of ancient ceramic technology. It is expected that the realization of the programme will lead to the determination of the crucial parameters that must be incorporated into the study of ancient ceramics. The application of this integrated system on the ceramics of ancient Abdera, which constitutes an important part of the Greek archaeological heritage, will help to extract important conclusions about the technology and the provenance of ancient ceramics. Moreover the programme aims to the training of new researchers and the simultaneous realization of PhD thesis.

"E-QUALity - Supporting the customization of Mass Media and employees in the area of Northeast Greece"

The aims of the program are similar to the Equal project. To support the customization of companies and their employees against the structural financial changes, the use of information technology and other new technologies. The promotion of tele-working, e-commerce, hygiene and security at work, productivity metrics and its relation with fees, company diagnostics and benchmarking, briefing in quality control subjects are also included within the aims of the project.

"Traditional Wood Craftsmen and Trade in the Aegean, Thrace and Cyprus"

The aim of this project is to locate, accumulate and record information regarding traditional wood craftsmen and their trade with emphasis on furniture manufacturing. The objective is to develop a multimedia database with written and verbal records, pictures, drawings etc that will be used to study the spread of the trade and craftsmen in the areas of Thrace, the Aegean and Cyprus and trace their similarities and discrepancies in these geographical areas and preserve their know-how.

"Study and Web-publishing of the dry stone wall structures of Thrace, The Aegean and Cyprus"
Funded by the Programme THRACE-AEGEAN-CYPRUS 2001-2002. Partners: University of Cyprus, The Aegean University.

The aim of this project is to survey, record and categorize the dry wall structures found in the area of Thrace, the Aegean and Cyprus. The objective is to study their similarities and discrepancies in these geographical areas with common cultural and historical origins, and to preserve the rich knowledge of the traditional craftsmen that are disappearing today. The deliverables of this project will include videos showing traditional craft techniques, digital maps of the locations of existing structures, and a web-site with all relevant information. All information will be also available on CD for interested cultural organizations.

"Tele-Education Software For Interactive Video Lecturing (MULTIMEDIA-TESVIL)"

The main purpose of the project is to develop a tele-education software for interactive video lecturing based on communication over the Internet in order to make video lecturing system cheaper, widely accessible and highly interactive. Using low band width data, this software will enable the users-students to submit their inquiries to the users-educators and to interact with each other on-line, while the teachers will have the opportunity to supervise and monitor the level of student participation and to assess the level of comprehensiveness.

"Go Digital"
"E-business awareness and training". Funded by the Ministry of Development, in the framework of the Operational Programmes (OP) "Information Society" and "Competitiveness" funded by the 3rd Community Support Framework of the European Union.

The main aim of this project is to help companies understand the importance of the Internet and to create digital awareness. The measure is aimed at supporting specific business procedures online that will attract a large number of Greek SMEs to the use of E-Commerce. Tuition is provided by trainers who are selected, trained and sent into SMEs. This is a scheme being run in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace by Democritos University of Thrace, CETI, TEI Kabalas, DESMOS, HKE and nationally by GRNET, the Greek Research and Technology Network. The aim is to transfer knowledge to the company as a whole by having a trainer on site. The relationship built with the trainer means that the SME can benefit from a much longer-term, personalised support mechanism. The target for the East Macedonia and Thrace region is 3500 SMES.

The objective of this project is the promotion of collaboration among laboratories, research groups, enterprises and cultural organizations involved or interested the field of cultural informatics. The aim is to provide to the participating members a broader and complete information on the activities of other members, as well as the international developments in the field. An additional aim is to provide a broader framework for activities promoting cultural informatics as the state-of-the-art technology immediately connected to the great national asset of culture and enable the members to exploit funding opportunities from a better standpoint through appropriate collaborations. National and international seminars and meetings are held for this purpose, and a relevant site will be created in the Internet.

The aim is an inter-disciplinarian approach of this novel type of work that can play an important role for growth and employment. Among the activities are included the undertaking of actions regarding the real and "virtual" member collaboration, the following of international developments in the field of teleworking (new technology solutions, "virtual enterprises" etc.), as well as the dissemination of scientific information regarding its implementation.

Objective of this research project is the broadcasting of multimedia data through low orbit, broadband satellite networks (LEO). The project is realized with the collaboration of the Observatory of Athens, C.E.T.I. and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

"Ark of refugee heirloom"
Funded by INTEREG II

The aim of this project is the recording, photographing and registration in an INTERNET database of more than four thousand items, heirloom of the 1914-1924 refugees living in the areas of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It is attempted in this way, to document the cultural identity of the Greeks and distinguish their presence and cultural production in their places of origin, lying beyond the present borders of Greece. In addition, the thorough documentation and publication will help to safeguard these important and rare collection items and will offer new possibilities for research and cross-referencing of primary information. At the same time it is expected to advance the "cultural tourism" of the area.

"Thrace and the Greek Parliament"
Funded by the Greek Parliament

The project will produce a multimedia CD-ROM, which will include all documents from the Greek Parliament proceedings referring to Thrace, dating back to 1843 until present. In addition, a web page with similar content will be published in the Internet. These products will establish a supplemental historical database for all scientists who are interested in the modern history of Thrace.
