Chartered Researcher of the Institute, Dr. Tsiafakis Despoina, in collaboration with the Professor of the Department of History & Archaeology (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), Mr. M. Tiverios and the Lecturer of the same Department, Ms. E. Manakidou, will present in the 20th Archaeological Conference titled "The Archaeological Project in Macedonia and Thrace", which will be organised in Thessaloniki between 13-17 of February 2006, their project that considers "Excavations in Karabournaki during 2005: the ancient settlement".

Lecture by Dr. Despoina Tsiafakis on Monday 23rd of January at the Lilian Voudouri Hall (Institute of Thracian Art and Tradition) titled "Thrace through Time". Dr. Tsiafakis presented, with the aid of transparencies, the history of Thrace and of the Thracian tribes analyzing their course of evolvement from the period of myths and their prehistory to their first contact with the Greek civilization. The wandering through the history of Thrace continued with thorough references to the life, morals, customs, religion and culture of the population of Thrace during the Classical and Hellenic era and the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empire ending at the beginnings of the 20th C. and Thrace's adherence to Greece. The lecture forms part of a cycle of lectures titled "Thrace through Time", organised by CETI's Cultural Heritage Unit in collaboration with the Institute of Thracian Art and Tradition.

CETI's Director, Prof. Christodoulos Chamzas, participated as invited speaker, from 16th to 20th of April 2004, at the Conference on "Advanced On-Site Laboratory for European Antique Heritage Restoration" that was organized by the Culture 2000 Program in Romania, where he gave a lecture on "Digitization and archiving of archaeological sites".

He was informed about E.C. ’s organizational and institutional issues and met personnel of the Commission’s offices concerned with Education and Culture.

Dr D. Tsiafaki, Research Assistant Professor in CETI, participated at the Conference of Archaeology "The Archaeological works in Macedonia and Thrace. 17th Meeting" that took place in Thessaloniki between the 9th and 13th of February 2004. Dr. Tsiafaki presented at this Conference two papers: "Excavating researches at Karabournaki during 2002: the ancient settlement" written in collaboration with Prof. M. Tiverio and Dr. E. Manakidou, and "Karabournaki 2003: Applications of new technologies on the excavating researches of the ancient settlement".

Dr D. Tsiafaki, Research Assistant Professor in CETI, was invited by Princeton University Museum to give a lecture at the Symposium “Monsters and Mischwesen: The Human Animal in Early Greek Art” in November 22nd, 2003. The title of her lecture was “Sphinx and Siren. Parallel routes and dual aspects of female killers in Early Greek Art”.

Papadopoulou, fellow scholars at CETI, presented on 23-27 September 2003, at the International Conference “Instrumental Methods Analysis, Modern Trends and Applications (IMA ’03)”, at Thessaloniki, Greece, the following two papers: “The Effect of Angle of Incidence in μ-XRF Spectroscopy of Various Material Samples”, by N. Tsirliganis, D. Papadopoulou, R. Loukou, K. Dietrich, M. Schreiner and “Quantitative μ-XRF of Silicate Materials with Mono- and Polycapillaries”, by K. Dietrich, Z. Loukou, M. Schreiner, N. Tsirliganis, D. Papadopoulou. The Conference was organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Athens, the University of Ioannina, the University of Patras and the University of Crete.

Dr P. Sotiropoulos, researcher at CETI’s Department of Educational Technology, and Prof. B. G. Mertzios presented their work entitled “Nonlinear Coordinate Logic Filters: Fractal Modeling and Interpretations” at the 10th International Workshop on Systems, Signals and Image Processing (IWSSIP’03) organized by the Czech Technical University (Dept. of Telecommunications Engineering) and co-sponsored by the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASHIP) and IEEE, on 10-11 September 2003, in Prague, Czech Republic.

Dr Despoina Tsiafakis, Researcher Assistant Professor in the Cultural and Educational Technology Institute, gave a lecture at Harvard University Art Museums in Boston, USA, at the XVI International Congress of Classical Archaeology of the Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica (AIAC), on 23-26 August 2003. The lecture regarded the work of Dr D. Tsiafakis, A. Tsompanopoulos, G. Pavlidis, D. Papadopoulou, Dr N. Tsirliganis, V. Evangelidis and Prof. Chr. Chamzas, “Archiving Cultural Objects in the 21st century: Pottery from Karabournaki”.

CETI's Director, Prof. Christodoulos Chamzas, and Dr Nestor Tsirliganis, researcher at CETI's Department of Cultural Technology, attended the Workshop on the Digitization of Cultural Content, organized under the Greek auspices of the European Union by the Greek Ministry of Culture at Corfu, on 27-28 of June 2003. Following the Ministry's invitation, Prof. Ch. Chamzas gave a lecture on "3D-GIS: A new approach to the 3D digitization of Cultural Objects".

Dr Despoina Tsiafakis gave a lecture at J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, USA, early June 2003. Subject of the lecture was the Excavations at Karabournaki, an ancient settlement at the edge of the promontory in the Thermaic Gulf that might be related to ancient Therma. The current research in the area involves the digitization of the excavations and pottery analysis in CETI.

On the 11th & 12th of April 2003, Dr Sotiropoulos participated as a trainer at the Training Seminar of Educational Coordinators of Greek Schools Abroad, organized by the Greek Ministry of Education & Religion and DIPODE (ΔΙΠΟΔΕ), "How can we use Information Communication Technology in Teaching?".

Dr P. Sotiropoulos, researcher at CETI and Mrs D. Makri, one of CETI's fellow scholars, participated at the "Adaptive Hypermedia Workshop", organized on the 7th of March 2003 at CEDEFOP, Thessaloniki.

Dr P. Sotiropoulos attended in March 2003 an International Conference that was organized under the Programme EQUAL at Logrono, Spain. Specifically, the focus groups and Dr. Sotiropoulos studied the development of a Tool for the Autodiagnosis of the Needs in Education and New Technologies.

Dr Despoina Tsiafakis, researcher in the Cultural and Educational Technology Institute, in cooperation with Prof. M. Tiverios, professor at the Department of History and Archaeology in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and his colleague Dr E. Manakidou, lecturer at the same Department, presented their work on "Excavating at Karabournaki in 2002: ancient settlement" at the 16th Archaeological Meeting (AEMTh) held in Thessaloniki 13th-15th of February 2003.

Dr Despoina Tsiafakis and Dr Nestor Tsirliganis, researchers at CETI, as well as Mr. George Pavlidis, special technical scientist on Multimedia Applications at CETI, in cooperation with Dr Sofia Antoniadou, curator at the Pieridis Foundation, presented on the 29th of January 2003, at a meeting organized by the Byzantine and Christian Museum under the title "Conservation and Presentation of Conserved Pieces of Art. Technical Problems - Aesthetic Problems", a study regarding the contribution of modern science and technology to the conservation and restoration of artifacts and the preservation of cultural heritage. The title of the presentation was: "TRUE LIES: The illusion of Preservation in time, through Reality of Modern Science and Technology."
